New Plans – New Directions

There’s been quite a few changes that have happened since I last posted any updates about the van conversion. In this time I’ve decided on an a different direction for the van. I’m going to do my own hybrid box truck style conversion.

This is not my van. It belongs to the owner of American Backroad Company. It’s the inspiration for my new direction with the van project. I stumbled into the idea while browsing Instagram.

I like the size of this van. I also have been studying other boxvan conversions and find that there’s much better use of space when the walls are square. I won’t have to compromise on floor plans or windows because of the existing doors (stock slider and rear barn doors) because they will be gone.

I plan to cut off the rear part of the body just behind the front doors to essentially create my own cab/chassis or cutaway configuration. I don’t plan to be as dramatic as Munrobuilt was with his van but the results will be similar. I’ll get rid of the problem areas of the body and have a clean slate to work with.

I will fabricate my own box with a pop-up roof as well. That will give me the flexibility of building something that meets the max height of 105″ that will fit in my garage and I won’t have to deal with trying to adapt an existing commercial-style box to the 3rd Gen Econoline chassis.

I’m really looking forward to this new direction. I’m planning to mock it up in Photoshop soon and then maybe figure out how to model it in Sketch Up or some other 3D program.
